Our PRP Injection

When you know you are going to have a PRP injection done, it is important to stop all other medications 2 to 3 weeks prior to having your injections performed. You want to make sure all patients drink plenty of fluids the day before their procedure and take anti-anxiety medication if need be. This is an in-office procedure, and requires a professional to do the procedure.

First, blood will be drawn from the patient’s arm for about 15 to 60 mL, more or less depending on the patient. The blood is processed using a centrifuge machine.

Then, Dr. Kalia will prepare the centrifuged platelet-rich plasma for injection. The affected joint area is cleaned with alcohol or iodine. The site is then numbed, and if an ultrasound is being used the gel with be applied to the injection site and the probe will be moved against the skin to get a live image of the tendon on the screen. The patient will be asked to relax, which will facilitate the injection and make it less painful.

Using a syringe and needle, Dr. Kalia inserts a small amount of platelet-rich plasma into the affect tendon.

Finally, the affected area is cleaned and bandaged. A PRP injection typically stimulates a series of biological responses, including inflammation, which means the site may appear to be swollen and or painful for 3 to 5 days.
